Andossi
Surrounded by the Italian Alps, the project consists of the demolition of an existing two storey mountain “rifugio” to make way for a new, two storey residential home. Externally, the 70s rendered building is generally unremarkable in comparison to the surrounding historical dwellings. Internally, its layout is convoluted, derivative of its original use as a hospitality and boarding venue.

Nestled into the side of the mountain, the proposed design draws inspiration from both the natural setting and surrounding Italian vernacular. Responding to this context, external cladding of stone and timber grounds the soaring roof above. Accounting for both summer and winter use, the compact floor plan allows the lower level to be sealed off for energy efficiency - letting the house grow and shrink to suit a multi-generational family.
